Celebrating 55 Years of the Union
By Admin November 4, 2026
Eid Al Etihad 2026 in Downtown Dubai
Every year on 2 December, the UAE pauses to celebrate the day seven emirates came together as one nation. In 2026 the country marks 55 years since the Union, and Eid Al Etihad (the name, meaning "Celebration of the Union", that National Day has carried since 2024) promises to be one of the most meaningful yet.
This year's celebrations coincide with the UAE's Year of Family, with a focus on the families, generations and communities who have shaped the country over the past five and a half decades. It's a fitting theme for a holiday that is, at its heart, about togetherness.
If you're planning to spend Eid Al Etihad in the city, Downtown Dubai is one of the most spectacular places to be. Here's how to make the most of it.
When is the holiday?
Eid Al Etihad is celebrated on 2nd December, and the public holiday has traditionally covered 2nd and 3rd December. In 2026 those dates fall on a Wednesday and Thursday, so many residents will be looking at a long weekend, especially those who can add a day of leave. Keep an eye on official government announcements for confirmation of the holiday dates.
Warm up with the Dubai Run
The season of celebration starts a little early in Downtown. Dubai Run, the grand finale of the Dubai Fitness Challenge, is scheduled for Sunday 22 November, with 5km and 10km routes along Sheikh Zayed Road. In recent years the 5km route has looped through Downtown Dubai, past Dubai Mall, Dubai Opera and Burj Khalifa.
Taking part is free, but you'll need to register and collect a bib in advance through the official Dubai Fitness Challenge website. Staying with us puts you minutes from the start, without the early-morning drive across the city.
A city dressed in red, green, white and black
In the days leading up to 2nd December, Downtown Dubai takes on a proud new look. Flags line the Boulevard, buildings glow in the national colours, and Burj Khalifa itself often joins in with special light displays. Evening strolls around Burj Lake become a celebration in their own right, as families, friends and visitors gather to soak up the atmosphere.
Across the city, look out for fireworks, cultural performances, heritage displays and community events. Full programmes are usually announced closer to the date, so check the official Eid Al Etihad and Visit Dubai channels for the latest line-up.
Discover Emirati heritage
National Day is the perfect moment to explore the stories behind the skyline. A short drive from Downtown, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood and the Etihad Museum offer a fascinating look at life before the Union and the moment the nation was born. For an evening out, Global Village, open for its 31st season, brings together cultures from around the world, with festive entertainment throughout the holiday period.
Celebrate as a family
With the Year of Family as this year's theme, there's no better time to gather everyone together. Our One Bedroom Family Suites and Two Bedroom Suites give the whole family room to relax, with fully equipped kitchenettes and balconies overlooking the Boulevard or the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Fountain. For larger gatherings, the Four Bedroom Royal Penthouse brings everyone together under one roof, with a panoramic balcony made for watching the city celebrate.
While the adults relax by the pool or unwind at Rayya Wellness, younger guests can enjoy our indoor and outdoor kids' facilities. And for the photo the whole family will treasure, head up to our viewing deck as Burj Khalifa lights up in the colours of the flag.
Gather around the table
Food is at the centre of every Emirati celebration, and Kenza is the perfect place to share a meal with family and friends. Our all-day dining restaurant brings global flavours together with Arabic favourites, live cooking stations and terrace seating with views of the city. Prefer to celebrate in private? In-room dining is available 24/7, and Downtown Perk is open around the clock for coffee and something sweet.
Our tips for the long weekend
Book early, as National Day is one of the busiest weekends of the year in Downtown. Use the Metro to the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station to avoid traffic on the busiest evenings. Head out in the cooler evening hours, when the celebrations really come alive. And don't forget your flag. Everyone else will have theirs.
However you choose to celebrate, we'd be honoured to be part of your Eid Al Etihad. Book directly through our website for exclusive perks, and join us in Downtown Dubai as the nation celebrates 55 years together.
